How do I know if I suffer from Dry Eye Disease?

One of the most common symptoms of dry eyes is blurred vision, even with glasses and contacts. For example, if you blink your eyes and things look clearer, you may have dry eyes.

Other common symptoms include:

  • A stinging, burning, scratching sensation in your eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Gritty/sandy eyes
  • Feeling like something is in your eye
  • Red eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses at the end of the day
  • Filmy vision
  • Tired eyes or eye fatigue- you want to relax your eyes even though you are not otherwise tired

Dry Eye can also be related to common medications. The side effects of the following medications can also affect tear production.

Common medications include:

  • Blood pressure medications
  • Antidepressants
  • Sleeping pills
  • Heartburn tablets
  • Drugs for acne
  • Birth control pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, and usage of contraceptives can also increase the risk of dry eyes

Treatment Options

Tear Care

Your Meibomian glands, found in your eyelids, play a crucial role in creating the oily layer of your tears, which prevents rapid tear evaporation. When these glands are blocked or inflamed, your tears can evaporate too quickly, leading to dry eye syndrome.

The TearCare system uses a two-step process to address this issue. First, it applies gentle heat to the eyelids using flexible stickers. This procedure is done while your eyes are open, enabling you to blink naturally and maintain your comfort.

For the second step, Dr. Eckhart performs a gentle procedure to manually express the oil glands within your eyelids. The combination of controlled heat and lid expression restore the natural balance of your tears, improving the symptoms of dry eye.

Eye Eco

Eye Eco offers a premier line of products for your eyelid care. Dr Eckhart will customize an individualized plan using a combination of Eye Eco’s lid cleansers, serums, and heat masks to treat your chronic dry eye.

Physician’s Recommended Nutriceuticals (PRN)

Physician’s Recommended Nutriceuticals offers a unique line of high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplements that treat a variety of conditions, such as: dry eye, glaucoma, diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and many autoimmune diseases. Dr Eckhart will help you select a formulation to meet your unique needs.

Heat Mask

Warm heat can help produce high-quality tears by preventing tears from evaporating too quickly.  EyeEco masks feature machine washable plush covers and beads that heat to the optimal temperature for treating dry eye.
